Under Ash is a first-person shooter released in 2001 that follows Ahmed, a Palestinian character resisting Israeli military presence. The game tasks players with progressing from nonviolent acts like throwing stones to attacking military installations. A strict mechanic ends the game instantly if a civilian is harmed. Despite its narrative goals the player cannot secure a winning outcome adding layers of tension to the gameplay. Developed by Afkar Media the game is often compared to America's Army but exists as a paid title rather than a free download.
