Under Defeat is a fast-paced shoot 'em up where you pilot a helicopter through chaotic WWII-inspired battles. Set in an alternate timeline, the game pits you against a Union force armed with a mix of Allied and Axis tech. The controls let you rotate your chopper mid-level, adding a dynamic twist to the vertical scrolling format. While the 3D visuals and slightly angled perspective give it a layer of depth, the core gameplay sticks to classic arcade shooter roots. Missions feel like a throwback to late '80s Toaplan titles, with dense wave patterns and tight gunplay. The game drew attention for its polarizing premise, players take the role of Empire forces, depicted as German-speaking troops, clashing against English-speaking enemies. Historical nods pop up in enemy designs, like Japanese naval ships in one stage. Though it launched late in the Dreamcast’s lifespan, it outsold expectations.
