"Given that Underground is half game and half educational tool, it's impressive that the developer has made it so appealing to the general public. Challenging gameplay, unique controls and a surprisingly engaging storyline all held together with a glue of unadulterated charm makes this game a real joy to play. It's got a few potential bugs to consider at launch, but they aren't particularly detrimental to the overall experience. Underground is a roller coaster of a puzzle game that manages to bring something truly original to the Wii U eShop."

Underground is a 1991 shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System where you navigate twisting tunnels in search of gold. Controlled from a top-down perspective, players dig through dirt and rock, collecting treasures while fending off a variety of creatures that lurk in the underground. Movement is precise but tense, with limited visibility adding to the challenge. The game’s simplicity is its strength, just you, your pickaxe, and the ever-present threat of cave-ins or hostile bugs. What sets Underground apart is its relentless pacing and straightforward mechanics that keep you focused on survival. While the graphics are rudimentary by today’s standards, the core loop of digging, dodging, and grabbing loot remains satisfyingly addictive. As part of Action 52’s roster, it’s a forgotten gem for fans of retro arcade-style action. Its single-player format and short levels make it easy to pick up and play, though some may find the difficulty spikes and limited variety in enemy types frustrating after repeated attempts.
