About

Urban Assault is a 1998 PC strategy-shooter hybrid that lets you toggle between first-person unit control and top-down resource management. You guide squads in real time, sniping enemies or dodging fire while also building power stations and turrets to fuel your operations. Victory hinges on capturing territories to boost resource output, which funds new units and keeps your command post mobile. The game balances action and planning, demanding quick reflexes and strategic foresight in equal measure. Set amid a fractured Earth in the late 21st century, it pits the Resistance against rival human factions and alien invaders. Its blend of FPS mechanics and RTS logistics was uncommon for the era, offering a niche but frenetic experience. With a small but dedicated following among retro strategy fans, it remains a curious artifact of late-90s PC gaming’s experimental phase. The lack of modern updates means it plays very much like software from its time, but the dual-control system still feels surprisingly fluid for its age.

Storyline

In a future Earth that has fallen victim to a chain of ecological disasters, humanity has plunged into a new world war for resource control. A human faction called the Resistance is at war against the totalitarian Ghorkovs, the fanatic Taerkastens and the insidious Black Sect splinter faction. The conflict is joined by the Mykonian and Sulgogar alien races, who also crave for the Earth's resources. The game focuses on the Resistance campaign for control over the European and North African territories.
