Utopia is a brief but unsettling adventure that follows Akane and a comatose girl named Yui as they navigate a surreal, nightmare-like world. Set in a hospital room that quickly spirals into something far stranger, the game blends quiet tension with sudden jolts of horror. Players guide the pair through shifting environments that feel less like a traditional RPG map and more like a twisted storybook. Choices and exploration drive progress toward one of three endings, though the game’s short runtime, around an hour, keeps things focused. The game’s eerie atmosphere and psychological undertones stand out, with sparse dialogue and environmental storytelling creating a lingering sense of unease. Originally released in 2014 and translated into English and Portuguese, it’s a free title that continues to circulate in indie circles. Its compact design and unsettling tone have earned it a cult following, with many praising how it packs a memorable punch without overreaching. The use of RPG Maker’s visual style amplifies the low-fi horror, making it a standout example of what small-scale games can achieve.
Due to a sudden health problem, Akane is admitted to the hospital for a while and finds out that she shares her room with a younger girl in a coma. On the first night together, however, Akane wakes up and is surprised to see the girl staring at him by the bed, jumping and apparently healthy. The two had entered young Yui's comatose mind. A vast and dangerous world that opens like a book for the pair and makes, as they descend to the bottom, the charms and mysteries become increasingly cruel truths.
