Vampire: The Masquerade, Shadows of New York is a narrative-driven visual novel developed by Draw Distance. Released September 10, 2020, it follows Coteries of New York and expands on the tabletop RPG’s lore. Set in a gritty, modern New York, you play a Lasombra vampire ostracized by your clan, thrust into a political conspiracy after an Anarch leader’s murder. The game blends dialogue choices, branching storylines, and quick-time events to simulate vampiric abilities. It’s a slow, atmospheric experience focused on moral ambiguity and clan politics. Available on PS4, PC, Xbox, Switch, Linux, and Mac, it’s a single-player title that leans heavily into the gothic horror themes of the Masquerade universe.
The core loop revolves around reading dense dialogue, selecting responses, and managing a health meter through QTEs. As a Lasombra, you use Dominate and other disciplines to manipulate NPCs, with success tied to dice rolls and clan traits. Investigation scenes involve searching crime scenes for clues, which unlock branching paths. The lack of combat means tension is built through social interactions and timed decisions. Each choice subtly shifts allegiances and outcomes, though the story rarely surprises. Sessions last 30, 60 minutes, with minimal interactivity outside of text and button prompts. Controls are standard for visual novels, keyboard or controller work, but responsiveness is inconsistent in QTE sections.
The PlayPile community and critics have not embraced this game. It holds a 32.8/100 on IGDB from 10 ratings, the lowest in the series. Completion rates average 40%, with 60% of players abandoning it before finishing. Reviews highlight “agonizing pacing” and “underdeveloped characters,” though fans of the lore praise its atmospheric writing. Average playtime is 7.2 hours, with 82% of players spending less than 10 hours. Community moods skew negative: 14% love it, 23% like it, and 63% dislike or hate it. One critic called it “a fascinating failure,” noting it’s “too niche even for Masquerade enthusiasts.” Achievements are sparse (15 total), with most unlocked by progressing through key plot points.
Shadows of New York is a polarizing entry in the Masquerade canon. At its best, it’s a moody, dialogue-heavy experience for die-hard fans of the tabletop setting. At its worst, it’s a 10-hour slog with little reward. The $29.99 price tag feels steep given the low replayability. If you’ve played Coteries and crave more Lasombra lore, it’s worth a try. Otherwise, skip it, the community’s 33% approval rate and lack of substantive updates since 2020 make it a gamble. Stick with the 2018 prequel for a better introduction to the universe.
You’re a nobody. An outcast in your own vampiric sect. A political prisoner of no particular value. An immigrant who never found her roots in a city of immigrants. A chainsmoker whose favorite pastime is staring blankly at the streets through the windows of a fast food joint at 4AM. The sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach tells you that you’re doomed, and distorted voices from the shadows seem to agree. The curse of your clan makes interacting with everyday technology difficult. Dissociation is your natural state. But when New York’s Anarch leader meets a gruesome end, out of all the bloodsuckers in the metropolis, you’re the one picked to investigate. Make no mistake: this is obviously a trap, yet another move in the horrible game of Jyhad, the eternal struggle for power between warring vampire generations. But you’re Lasombra, and if there’s one thing you know, it’s this: if the Ventrue Prince and her followers underestimate you, they’re going to deeply regret it.
