About

Vespers is a text-based narrative simulator that drops you into the role of a monk trapped in a plague-ridden monastery. You navigate a dimly lit, claustrophobic setting through sparse but evocative prose, making small but weighty choices as resources dwindle and desperation grows. The focus is on survival through observation and careful action, lighting candles, rationing supplies, and interpreting cryptic clues to prolong your life. There’s no combat or combat-like mechanics, just the slow creep of isolation and the pressure of dwindling options. The game’s strength lies in its eerie atmosphere and the quiet dread of its premise. With no clear timeline or location, the ambiguity amplifies the tension, forcing you to weigh every decision against the certainty of death. Though brief, its impact lingers, and the lack of traditional gameplay elements lets the story breathe. Released in 2005, it remains a stark, memorable example of narrative-driven design.

Storyline

You are a monk, in the monastery of Saint Cuthbert's; where and exactly when is unspecified. Five days ago you shut the monastery gates to keep out the plague, but now most of the monks have died anyway. The bell rings six for Vespers; you are in your small, dark bedroom. You do not have the plague yet, and are carrying a candle and tinderbox, and wearing a frock.
