Virtual Boy Wario Land drops you into a labyrinth of traps and treasure as the greedy antihero chases gold. Maneuver through shifting environments filled with hazards like bottomless pits and toxic pools while dodging enemies. Switch between three transformed versions of Wario each with distinct abilities, like Eagle Wario’s midair dashes, to overcome obstacles. Combat leans on direct attacks and timed button presses, blending platforming precision with arcade-style action. The 3D visuals add depth to every crumbling wall and shadowy corridor. The game’s standout is its aggressive use of the Virtual Boy’s stereoscopic display, making collapsing floors and darting enemies feel unnervingly close. Despite its 1995 release, the level design remains tight, with secrets tucked into nearly every screen. Completion rates hover around 15% on speedrun sites, hinting at its punishing difficulty. While the system’s limitations show, the chaotic energy of Wario’s treasure hunt still crackles through the pixelated chaos.
I, Wario, have an interesting story to tell. One day during my vacation in the Awazon river basin, I landed my trusty seaplane, Bulldog, and decide to relax in the shadow of the beautiful Aldegara Waterfall. While basking in the sun, I spied some strange creatures with masks entering the waterfall. This piqued my interest! I hurried over and followed them into the waterfall. Behind the falls there was a large cave, and in the back of the cave ... there was a vault filled with a glorious mountain of treasure!! Some of the masked creatures jumped me, but I quickly overcame them. "This treasure is all mine now!", I though to myself and rushed in to collect the loot. Suddenly, the floor collapsed and I fell! I found myself deep within the Earth! I was quite angry and vowed revenge on these creatures, "I will get their treasure!!!"
