VR Soccer is a soccer simulation game that brought 3D graphics to sports gaming in 1995. You control teams with 22-player rosters across single-player matches, multiplayer face-offs, or co-op play. The game uses motion-captured animations from real Sheffield Wednesday players giving the movements a polished feel. Early versions focused on national teams while a 1996 update added 20 Premier League clubs from the 1996/1997 season. What sets VR Soccer apart is its early use of a full 3D engine which was rare for sports games at the time. The Club Edition version sold strongly in the UK becoming one of the top soccer game releases of the mid 90s. Available on six platforms including PlayStation and DOS it reached a wide audience during the rise of 3D gaming. Players still note the smooth animations and surprisingly deep tactical options for a 25-year-old title.
