About Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm

Iron Lore Entertainment delivered the final expansion for their acclaimed Warhammer 40,000 series in March 2008. This real-time strategy title builds directly on Dark Crusade by expanding the conflict to an interplanetary scale. Players control armies across a solar system map where they must conquer multiple planets and moons to claim victory. The release adds two distinct factions, the Sisters of Battle and the Dark Eldar, bringing the total playable armies to nine. It launched exclusively for PC on Microsoft Windows as the third major chapter in this specific trilogy, offering both single-player campaigns and multiplayer skirmishes for those who want to wage war across the galaxy without waiting for a full sequel.

Gameplay

Sessions involve managing resources while commanding units across distinct planetary surfaces. You construct bases, train troops, and research upgrades to build an army capable of holding ground against aggressive opponents. The core loop requires balancing production with tactical movement since each planet has unique terrain and objectives that affect unit performance. New air units arrive in this expansion, allowing you to strike from above or defend your positions against orbital bombardment. You customize hero units by swapping weapons and abilities as they gain experience points during combat. Campaigns force you to seize control of specific worlds while defending others from AI or human rivals. The meta-game map lets you cross the solar system, making each battle part of a larger strategic puzzle where losing a planet weakens your overall position significantly.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community has logged substantial hours into this title since its 2008 launch. Critics on IGDB rate it 73.4 out of 100 based on 76 reviews, suggesting solid approval despite the game's age. Average playtime for dedicated players often exceeds 40 hours to complete all campaign missions and unlock every achievement. Community mood data indicates a strong appreciation for the expanded faction options and the strategic depth added by the new air units. Players frequently discuss the balance between the fast-moving Dark Eldar and the heavily armored Sisters of Battle in online forums. Achievement tracking shows that completing the interplanetary conquest on higher difficulties remains a significant hurdle, with only about 15 percent of users managing to secure all available medals.

PlayPile's Take

This expansion is worth your time if you want more content for an established RTS engine without learning a new system. The price point usually sits low on secondary markets, making it a cheap addition to any library. You get access to 34 different maps and two fresh armies that change how you approach combat. Achievements exist for both campaign completion and multiplayer dominance if you enjoy grinding for recognition. It is not a perfect game by modern standards since the AI can struggle with complex flanking maneuvers, but the strategic layer remains tight. Pick this up if you specifically want to play as the Sisters of Battle or Dark Eldar in a competitive environment.

Storyline

Sisters of Battle The Chamber Militant of the Emperor’s Holy Inquisition. Limited in numbers but incredibly powerful, the Sisters of Battle are second only to the Space Marines in terms of sheer fighting prowess. Ranging from the Sisters Repentia with their devastating ceremonial eviscerators to the awe-inspiring Penitent Engine, the Sisters of Battle are truly a force to be feared. Dark Eldar Twisted and corrupt cousins of the Eldar, these terrifying raiders from the furthest reaches of the Webway are feared and hated by all. Their incredible speed, reliance on close quarter combat and stunning and poisoning abilities allows them to quickly strike an enemy and be gone before reinforcements can arrive. Devastating air attacks Strategic warfare in the 41st Millennium reaches new heights as each army gains air units to rain death from the skies. Brutal domination Wage war across the entire solar system as the metagame map introduced in Dark Crusade is expanded to an interplanetary scale. Liberate, enslave, or destroy entire worlds as you unleash your armies’ fury across the galaxy. Players must now strive to conquer an entire solar system with multiple planets and moons to be conquered. In total 34 maps are available to the player.
