Warlord drops you into Japan in the year 1201 as a village ruler surviving on slave labor and raid spoils. Your main job involves managing resources while deciding each year how to train troops, hire samurai, or build merchant ships. You must balance food production against your treasury by importing goods or exporting what you have. Combat is always an option since pirates and rival warlords might attack, but you can also pay tribute to stay safe. Your own samurai will turn on you if your leadership looks weak, so you need to keep everyone happy while expanding your power over thirty years. The game offers three difficulty levels for those who want a steeper challenge. The ZX81 version strips away the map and animations, leaving just the raw decision making. Players often rate this title highly because it forces tough choices without holding your hand. You will face internal rebellions and external threats that test your strategy. Success means subjugating opponents before time runs out. Failure ends with your untimely death or total defeat. It is a straight forward simulation of power struggles in ancient Japan.
