Welcome House follows Keaton as he navigates a large mansion filled with shifting rooms and cryptic clues. Players solve environmental puzzles and collect items to progress through the house's ever-changing layout. The gameplay leans heavily on logic and observation with minimal dialogue. Each area introduces new mechanics like manipulating time or altering perspectives to unlock paths. The 1996 release shows its age with 16-bit era visuals but maintains a tense atmosphere through eerie sound design and sudden scares. The game's most memorable aspect is its relentless sense of unease. Unlike later horror adventures Welcome House avoids jump scares favoring a slow-building dread as the house seems to toy with Keaton's sanity. Gust's development team later gained fame for Enchanted Hour but this early title already showcases their talent for crafting mysterious spaces. While puzzle solutions sometimes feel unintuitive fans of retro adventure games might appreciate the challenge. The PlayStation and Saturn versions play nearly identically with minor graphical tweaks between platforms.
