"Welcome to Elk is an important game in that it makes the unimportant worthy of remembering, giving them the same gravitas any celebrity automatically receives. We tell the bad stories because we’re left holding baggage of an unknown weight, but we need to tell the good stories as well — to shine a light against the otherwise dark moments that seemingly act as traumatic bookmarks in life. I’m still left pondering the meaning behind Welcome to Elk, afraid of coming back to what it’s already told me: these are just stories, and now it’s my turn. If you have three or so hours and are prepared for the disturbing imagery and tales within, I highly, highly recommend GOTY material Welcome to Elk."

Welcome to Elderfield is an indie RPG where life in a secluded town feels just a bit off. You start with free time after school and plenty of options for how to spend it. You can farm crops, fish in local waters, or dig up mines. The game also lets you cook meals, craft items, and talk to odd neighbors who seem to know more than they say. Strange things happen at night while unsettling news plays on a loop during the day. You might get lost in a dead mall or try to befriend the old gods without knowing what will happen next. What sets this title apart is how it mixes mundane daily tasks with genuine horror elements. Players have noted the unsettling atmosphere that builds as you investigate local mysteries and encounter shifting beings in the dark. Some community members mention the risk of dying in your sleep adds a layer of tension that few other farming games include. The open-ended structure lets you ignore the main story if you just want to live out a quiet life, though the town itself seems to push you toward the unknown. It stands out as a simulator where safety is never guaranteed.
Nothing is usual in the secluded town of Elderfield. The townsfolk are odd, strange beings shift about in the dark and the local news reports seem more mysterious by the day. This is where you were born, and rarely do those born here leave... But, there is work to be done. Now finished with your schooling, you have an endless supply of free time and very little direction. Explore, earn money, make friends, solve mysteries, start a farm, cook food, go fishing, beseech the Old Gods, talk to the dead, cower beneath the pale moon and try not to die in you sleep. Welcome to Elderfield.
