Whirlo is a side-scrolling platformer where you play as Xandra a scaly adventurer with a knack for trouble. Navigate forested levels and ancient ruins using precise jumps and a trusty pitchfork that doubles as a weapon and climbing tool. The goal is simple: rescue Xandra’s family by collecting coins to buy extra lives and clearing paths through hordes of basic enemies. Each level mixes tight platforming and repetitive combat but the small stakes and colorful visuals keep things light. What sets Whirlo apart is its pitchfork mechanics which let you grapple surfaces and dispatch foes in one fluid motion. While the lack of magic or complex upgrades might feel barebones by today’s standards the game’s brevity and straightforward design appeal to fans of classic 16-bit simplicity. Released in 1992 it’s a rarely mentioned slice of early 90s platforming history that still holds up for quick sessions.
