Wild Gunman is a 1974 arcade shooter from Nintendo where players use a light gun to target a projected film sequence. The goal is to shoot a cowboy antagonist when his eyes blink, timing the trigger press to interrupt his onscreen movements. Each successful hit removes him from the scene while misfires result in the player’s avatar being felled. The mechanics lean heavily on reflexes and rhythm, with minimal onscreen feedback beyond the film’s pre-recorded action. The game’s most striking feature is its use of a 16mm film projector to display gameplay, a rare technique that gave it a distinct visual style for the era. While the gameplay loop is simple, the hardware setup marked an early experiment in blending pre-recorded media with live input. It coexisted with other niche titles like Shooting Trainer in Nintendo’s early arcade lineup, but few remember its influence today. At just 9 seconds of content per round, it’s a relic of minimalist design that prioritized novelty over depth.
