Wing War by Imagic tasks you with guiding a dragon through a maze-like world to collect fire, air, and water crystals. Combat involves shooting fireballs by pushing the joystick upward and in your desired direction. Enemies require varying numbers of hits, and exploration is key as you gather eggs that hatch into new dragons. While similar to Joust in its aerial combat, the game adds resource management and environmental puzzles that raise the complexity. The game’s standout feature is its crystal-depositing rules. Fire and water crystals can’t be placed consecutively or they’ll cancel each other out, air crystals must separate them. Players also need to budget fireballs carefully, as overuse leaves you vulnerable. Despite being announced for the US, it only launched in Europe in late 1983. This rarity and its layered strategy have made it a cult favorite among retro gaming circles, with some communities praising its clever use of simple mechanics.
