World Cup by Sega is a simple yet addictive soccer game from the late 70s. Two players battle head to head using a trackball to move their player and a rotary joystick to shoot the ball. The basic mechanics revolve around stealing possession by stepping onto the spot where an opponent holds the ball. It's all about quick reflexes and clever positioning in this fast paced arcade match. The control setup with trackball and joystick feels surprisingly modern for its time. While graphics are minimal the competitive edge is clear, some arcade halls even kept this title running for years. As one of the earliest examples of soccer gaming it laid the foundation for future soccer simulations without any fancy frills.
