X-Out is a side-scrolling shooter with eight underwater levels. After each stage, players use their score to buy new submarines and gear at a shop. Subs come in four types, each upgradable with weapons that fire in one, two, or three directions. Secondary options include sonic waves and missiles. Players can also buy satellites with custom movement patterns to assist in battle. Released in 1989, it ran on multiple 8-bit and 16-bit systems. The mix of progression mechanics and customization gave it a lasting appeal among retro shooter fans. While not the most graphically advanced, its strategic layering of weapons and satellite tactics added depth to the classic genre.
