About XCOM 2

XCOM 2 launched in February 2016 as a sequel to the 2012 hit Enemy Unknown. Firaxis Games built this turn-based tactical strategy where Earth has fallen under alien rule twenty years after humanity surrendered. You lead a scattered resistance force against an occupying regime that promises a bright future while hiding sinister agendas. The game supports single player and multiplayer modes across PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Mac. It is a gritty role-playing simulator where you rebuild XCOM to reclaim the planet. The stakes are high since your squad faces impossible odds against superior alien technology. This title blends deep narrative choices with hard combat tactics on multiple platforms.

Gameplay

You command a small team of soldiers in grid-based tactical missions that require careful positioning and cover usage. Every move matters because enemies can flank you if you leave flanks open. You manage a mobile base called the Avenger between missions to research new technologies, upgrade equipment, and assign recruits to specific roles. Combat unfolds in distinct phases where you choose actions like shooting or moving for each squad member. The difficulty spikes quickly as aliens learn your patterns and adapt their tactics. You also handle strategic decisions on the map by deploying agents to resistors who can sabotage alien operations or gather intelligence. Session times vary from quick skirmishes to long planning sessions where you optimize loadouts before jumping into a new mission.

What Players Think

Critics gave XCOM 2 strong marks with an 88 Metacritic score and an 83.9 rating on IGDB based on 429 user reviews. The PlayPile community describes the vibe as mind-bending, strategic, and occasionally cozy despite the intense combat. Players find it competitive enough to keep Twitch viewers engaged since it currently ranks #43 on the streaming platform. Average completion rates show that only 26.2% of players unlock achievements, suggesting a steep learning curve or high difficulty. The rarest achievement "Exquisite Timing" has been unlocked by just 0.90% of users. Most people spend significant time mastering the mechanics since the game rewards patience over quick reflexes.

PlayPile's Take

XCOM 2 is worth playing if you enjoy deep tactical challenges and do not mind losing units permanently. The current lowest price sits at $2.59 on GameBillet which makes it a bargain for the amount of content provided. There are 88 achievements to chase though only a fraction of players will secure them all. This game is not for casual gamers who want a relaxed experience but fits well for strategy fans willing to plan every turn. You should expect to spend dozens of hours rebuilding your resistance and uncovering alien secrets before the story concludes.

Storyline

Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces and XCOM, the planet's last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda below and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to rise from the ashes, expose the insidious truth behind the occupation, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.
