Xenon is a vertical scrolling shooter from 1988 where you control a space pilot battling alien Xenites in a nebula. Instead of moving straight up, you can maneuver freely in any direction. The twist is switching between a fast jet and a heavy tank mid-flight, adapting to different threats, like dodging ground fires or blasting through air defenses. Power-ups drop from destroyed enemies, boosting your speed or firepower. The game’s split between aerial and ground combat makes it feel more dynamic than typical shooters of the era. Developed by The Bitmap Brothers, Xenon stood out for its flexibility on 8-bit platforms like the Amiga and C64. The ability to swap vehicles on the fly was rare back then, earning it a cult following. A sequel, Xenon 2: Megablast, came the next year but the original remains notable for its tight controls and varied level designs. Players who enjoyed its hybrid gameplay often cite it as a precursor to later genre hits that blended air and land combat.
