Xybots is a cooperative shooter that throws you and a friend into large mazes to fight waves of mechanical enemies. Players navigate third-person tunnels and rooms filled with Xybots, zapping them with automatic fire while picking up health drops and weapons from floating discs. Movement feels twitchy and responsive, with tight controls that let you dart between cover or retreat under pressure. Two-player split-screen mode turns the chaos into a shared challenge, though be careful, your ally's bullets don't discriminate. The game’s charm lies in its raw energy and shared vulnerability. Early levels feel manageable but quickly escalate into frenetic battles where coordination becomes essential. While the Amiga version offers sharper visuals, the core gameplay holds up across platforms like C64 and Lynx. A small cult following still praises the game’s intensity, and many split-screen veterans remember it for the way it turned friends into accidental targets.
In Xybots, the players must travel through a 3D maze and fight against a series of robots known as the Xybots whose mission is to destroy all mankind. The first player is "Major Rock Hardy" while the second player is "Captain Ace Gunn", but their abilities are virtually identical other than movement speed.
