"Yakuza 3 Remastered may not have received the Kiwami treatment, but still features one of the strongest and emotional narratives in the series. Some may not enjoy the focus to be on Kiryu's "softer" side by taking care of the kids at the orphanage. The mini-games are still great at cleansing the palette, with golfing and karaoke as the highlights, but overall they aren't as strong as previous titles. Shame that the narrative pacing doesn't quite deliver in the second half of the game."

About Yakuza 3 Remastered

Yakuza 3 Remastered is a Japanese crime drama from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios that dropped in 2019 as part of Sega's collection. You play as Kazuma Kiryu, a former yakuza trying to run an orphanage in Okinawa. The game arrived on PS4, Xbox One, and PC with better graphics and restored scenes cut from the original Western launch. It blends open-world exploration with beat-em-up combat and deep storytelling. You spend time fixing up the orphanage, hunting for minigames across the map, and dealing with corporate conspiracies threatening the land. This title stands as a pivotal entry in the series where the protagonist tries to leave his violent past behind but keeps getting dragged back in.

Gameplay

You control Kiryu on foot through a vibrant version of Naha, Okinawa. The core loop involves walking around town to find NPCs who trigger side stories or quests. Combat happens in third person with heavy emphasis on melee strikes and special moves that drain an energy bar. You can grab environmental objects like bottles or chairs to use as weapons against gangs. Between fights, you manage the Asagao Orphanage by buying toys, fixing buildings, and cooking meals for the kids. The game features dozens of side activities ranging from fishing and karaoke to working at a maid cafe. Sessions often last hours as you chase completion goals or just explore the island's distinct districts without rushing the main plot.

What Players Think

Critics rated this title solidly with a Metacritic score of 77 and an OpenCritic average of 79. Sixty-four percent of reviewers recommended it, while GamingTrend gave it a 90 noting the highs are incredibly high despite some lows. PushStartPlay called it a cult classic that earned a special place in their heart. PlayPile data shows 50 achievements with an average unlock rate of just 26%. The hardest goal is World's Greatest Dad at only 3.20% completion. Community moods lean heavily toward nostalgic appreciation for the setting and character depth rather than modern competitive play. The score on IGDB sits at 69.3 based on 70 ratings, showing consistent appreciation for the narrative over mechanical complexity.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth your time if you enjoy long-form stories with tons of filler content that feels meaningful. The $49.99 price point gets you a remaster with restored scenes and better performance. You will likely spend 60 hours or more just to see the ending. The achievement system acts as a nice motivator for finding hidden collectibles, even if the rarest ones are frustratingly difficult. Do not expect a tight combat loop like modern fighters, but do expect one of the best character studies in gaming. Finish this before moving to the next sequel because the story arc here defines Kiryu's entire legacy.

Storyline

The Yakuza wars are spreading over to the tropical paradise of Okinawa. After leaving his last base in Kamimuro Chou, Kiryuu Kazuma went to Okinawa and opened an orphanage named Asagao with Haruka. Together with the children, they have taken in, the two slowly let go of the violent lives they have led prior to their arrival. However, the happy days are short-lived for the Yakuza are tightly connected with the Japanese government. A shady deal that involves the land on which Asagao is built spurs Kiryuu and Haruka back to their old hometown and fights with oppositional Yakuza groups. Fights and political intrigue come hand in hand, become the rising dragon and protect the sanctuary you have built.
