You play as Ichiban Kasuga a brash new lead for the series who navigates Japan’s underworld through dialogue choices and party-based combat. The story spans multiple cities with Yokohama as the central hub. Each character in your crew has distinct abilities that shift roles mid-turn letting you adapt tactics on the fly. Side activities include minigames and over-the-top interactions typical of the franchise but the core focus is on story and strategy. The Day One Edition adds eight cosmetic outfits from past Yakuza titles for players who want to dress the part. While combat changes divided longtime fans Metacritic scores remain strong at 82/100 with praise for bold direction. Combat can feel clunky at first but the branching narrative and quirky cast keep the experience engaging. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions launched November 2020 with no major updates since. Single-player only.
