Ys IX: Monstrum Nox drops you into the shoes of Adol Christin after he wakes up imprisoned in the floating city of Balduq. Nihon Falcom released this adventure role-playing title on September 26, 2019, for PlayStation 4, PC, Switch, and Stadia before a PS5 upgrade arrived later. You start as a prisoner cursed to become one of the Monstrum, a race of monsters that guard the city. Your goal is to survive while hunting down the Grimwald Nox threat before it eats Balduq whole. The game blends fast-paced combat with a classic Nihon Falcom narrative structure and deep lore about this strange world.
You spend most of your time running around Balduq or its surrounding zones in real-time action battles. Combat feels frantic since you juggle multiple enemies while managing stamina and special moves. The Monstrum abilities let you transform to break through obstacles or take on stronger foes with different attack patterns. You complete quests for the local inhabitants to unlock new areas and find hidden items scattered throughout the map. Sessions last anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour as you clear zones and tackle side missions. Controls feel responsive on a controller, though the PC version offers high frame rate options for smoother combat.
The PlayPile community shows strong engagement with this title since release. Average playtime sits around 32 hours for a standard run while completionists push past 45 hours to find every secret. Metacritic gave it a solid 78 out of 100 score which aligns with our internal rating data showing an 8.1 average from users. Community mood trends heavily positive with players praising the combat system and character growth mechanics. Only about 12% of users have failed to finish the main story, indicating high retention rates. Review snippets frequently mention the satisfying progression loop and the unique twist on the Ys formula compared to previous entries.
This game works best if you enjoy fast action RPGs with tight combat mechanics and a heavy focus on exploration. The price point sits around $40 to $50 depending on sales, which feels fair for the content provided. You will earn over 50 achievements including several challenging boss rush modes that test your skill. Some players find the story pacing uneven in the middle act, but the gameplay loop remains engaging throughout. Skip this title if you dislike grinding for resources or need a purely narrative experience without combat. The Monstrum transformation system alone makes the journey worthwhile for action fans.
