About Ys: The Oath in Felghana

Adol Christin returns in Ys: The Oath in Felghana, a 2005 action RPG remake developed by Nihon Falcom. This title reimagines the 16-bit classic "Ys III" with full 3D graphics while keeping the original story intact. Players control Adol and his companion Dogi as they visit Felghana, only to find a village under siege by monsters and political corruption. The game launched on PC, PSP, and legacy mobile devices before hitting Steam with modern features like cloud saves. It offers a straightforward single-player adventure focused on fast movement and combat rather than complex party management or slow exploration pacing typical of the genre.

Gameplay

You control Adol through side-scrolling arenas using tight controls that prioritize momentum over precision timing. The core loop involves sprinting into groups of enemies to trigger automatic sword strikes, dodging attacks with precise rolls, and managing a limited health bar without relying on traditional party heals. Boss battles require pattern recognition as you dodge screen-filling attacks while chipping away at their health bars. Exploration follows a Metroidvania structure where you unlock new movement abilities like double jumps or wall climbs to access previously unreachable areas. Sessions feel frantic because the game rarely lets you stop moving, forcing you to weave through obstacles and enemies simultaneously without pausing for inventory screens.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile rate this title with strong approval metrics that match its cult following status. The community average playtime sits at 12 hours for a standard run, while completionists who hunt all achievements spend around 18 hours. We track 37 ratings on IGDB yielding an 81.7 score, and Metacritic holds a solid 73 out of 100. Community mood data shows high engagement with 92% of reviewers noting the soundtrack as a standout feature. Achievement completion rates hover near 65%, suggesting the game offers enough challenge to keep players engaged without becoming tedious. Many users specifically cite the combat flow as the primary reason for returning to Felghana repeatedly.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best for fans of tight action mechanics who want a story-driven adventure without excessive grinding. The Steam version adds value through achievement tracking and cloud saves, making it a convenient purchase at its current price point. You will likely spend around 12 hours completing the main story, though finding all secrets takes longer. The combat system shines because every button press feels responsive, even if the graphics show their age from 2005. Skip this if you need deep RPG customization or slow-paced exploration. It remains a solid choice for anyone who enjoys fast-paced dungeon crawling with a memorable soundtrack.

Storyline

When redheaded thrill-seeker Adol Christin and his eternal blue-haired companion Dogi make an unannounced visit to Dogi's homeland of Felghana after an eight-year absence, it quickly becomes apparent that things have changed dramatically. Hordes of violent monsters roam the outskirts of town, a long-dormant volcano has suddenly sprung back to life and the new lord of the land has begun mercilessly and inexplicably extorting money from its long-suffering citizens. While Dogi seeks out his former combat master for answers, Adol tends to the townsfolk -- and finds himself embroiled in a world of political conspiracies, ancient legacies and unthinkable taboos.
