About Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is a high-octane action RPG from Nihon Falcom that dropped in 2016. You play as the red-haired hero Adol Christin, who wakes up shipwrecked on the cursed Isle of Seiren after a sea monster sinks his liner. The game blends classic dungeon crawling with an open-world exploration loop where you build a settlement called Castaway Village to house other survivors. It launched across PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation Vita. This entry marks Adol's return to the series after an eight-year break. You will fight beasts, solve puzzles in ancient ruins, and uncover the mystery of a woman named Dana who haunts your dreams throughout the adventure.

Gameplay

Movement feels snappy as you sprint across grassy plains and climb sheer cliffs using wall-jumps and grappling hooks. Combat relies on real-time combos where you dodge enemy attacks and unleash magic spells or heavy weapon strikes. You explore massive zones filled with hidden paths rather than linear corridors. A key mechanic involves managing your village, assigning tasks to rescued NPCs, and upgrading facilities to unlock new areas. Sessions usually involve clearing out a specific dungeon, fighting a boss, then returning to the settlement to progress the story. The game offers both single-player and cooperative modes for up to four players. Controls are responsive with a focus on speed and positioning during chaotic fights against giant beasts.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows this title holds strong appeal among fans of the genre. Metacritic gave it an 80 out of 100, reflecting solid critical reception. Community members rate it highly for its pacing and visual style. Average playtime sits around 25 hours for a standard run, though completionists spend over 40 hours hunting every secret. Players often describe the mood as intense but rewarding during boss encounters. Achievement data indicates that about 65 percent of users unlock all available trophies. Review snippets frequently mention the difficulty spike in late-game dungeons as a memorable challenge. The community vibe remains positive, with many players praising the soundtrack and character designs compared to other entries in the franchise.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth your money if you enjoy fast-paced combat over complex story systems. At launch it retailed around $60 on most platforms, but prices have dropped significantly since 2016. You get a full single-player campaign with optional co-op support. Achievement hunters will find plenty to do in those extra hours beyond the main quest. The village management adds a light layer of strategy without slowing down the action. Skip this if you prefer slow turn-based tactics or deep narrative choices over exploration. It delivers exactly what it promises without unnecessary fluff.

Storyline

Adol Christin is on a passenger liner called the Lombardia that is sailing from Xandria to the continent of Eresia. He and Dogi were recruited as a crew for the ship in exchange for their boarding. The ship's captain, Captain Barbaros, tells Adol the story of the cursed Isle of Seiren, where ships have vanished while passing by its perimeters. However, Adol's voyage was interrupted by an enormous sea monster attacking the ship. He and the other passengers were flung overboard as it dragged the ship to the bottom of the sea. Adol later awoke on the coast of the Isle of Seiren's beach. An island with ancient, untamed wilderness, populated by creatures seen nowhere else in the world. He later discovers other people who also washed ashore the island, so to aid their search for other survivors, and to better defend themselves from the primordial beasts that roam the island, Adol and his fellow castaways establish a settlement for themselves called Castaway Village. It was not long before Adol found himself experiencing cryptic dreams about a mysterious young woman with flowing blue hair, whose world Adol had never encountered before.
