About Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Chunsoft delivered this second entry in their Zero Escape saga back in February 2012. It is a mystery thriller visual novel that relies heavily on player choices and puzzle solving to drive the narrative forward. The story kicks off when protagonist Sigma awakens in an elevator with a stranger before being forced into a deadly game by nine total participants. You play through this single-player experience across PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Vita, or Nintendo 3DS. The title focuses on figuring out a complex plot involving betrayal while you navigate through distinct puzzle rooms to survive. It stands out as a dedicated story-driven adventure that demands your full attention to piece together the truth behind the escape attempts.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time reading dialogue and making decisions at key moments. These choices branch the narrative into different paths, often leading to alternate endings or new puzzle challenges. When you hit a dead end or need to progress, you must solve logic puzzles scattered throughout the rooms. The game includes an auto-advance mode so you can listen to the full voice acting without constantly tapping the screen. A memo function lets you jot down important clues during the story, and a flow chart displays how your specific choices alter the timeline. You will find yourself analyzing character interactions to decide who to trust or betray in the Ambidex Game. The pacing shifts between intense narrative beats and quiet moments of deduction required to unlock the next door.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile clearly respect this title based on an IGDB score of 86.9 out of 100 from 145 ratings. Our data shows a high completion rate among users who tackle the multiple endings, though average playtime stretches due to the sheer volume of branching paths. Community moods are overwhelmingly positive regarding the story depth but often show frustration during difficult puzzle sections. Review snippets frequently mention the satisfaction of unlocking every possible outcome in the flow chart. Most players agree the game requires patience to track down all secrets since the original calculator feature is missing from this version. The consensus remains that the mystery holds up well years after release despite some repetitive dialogue segments.

PlayPile's Take

This adventure is a solid choice for fans of complex mysteries who do not mind reading heavy amounts of text. The price on PC and consoles reflects its status as a premium narrative experience rather than a casual filler title. You will need to invest significant time to see all endings since the flow chart helps but does not solve the puzzles for you. Achievements are locked behind finding every secret ending, which requires careful note-taking in the memo function. Avoid this if you want fast action or simple mechanics. The game succeeds because it forces you to care about the characters before destroying their world. Play it only if you are ready to dissect every line of dialogue for clues.

Storyline

"He awoke in an elevator. Across the room was a strange girl he’d never met before, even though she seemed to know him... “Sigma...” “How do you know my name?” he asked, but before she could answer a rabbit appeared. “This elevator is about to fall!” Sigma and the girl left the elevator only to find themselves in a massive room with seven other strangers...nine people in all. The strange rabbit told them that they would have to play the Ambidex Game-a game of betrayal. The penalty for losing was death. Could these nine strangers trust one another long enough to escape their prison alive?"
