Zupay: Sombras de la Independencia is a 2D top-down hack and slash game where you play a gaucho bound to a vengeful Incan spirit. Set during Argentina's fight for independence, the game tasks you with fending off royalist forces while contending with the Zupay, a god of death that feeds on fear. Combat centers on fast melee attacks, environmental traps, and managing your demonic host's erratic influence. The map unfolds as you clear out enemy encampments, balancing offensive pushes with survival against overwhelming odds. The game blends historical conflict with mythological themes, offering a gritty art style and tense boss fights. Developer Abstract Tales leans into atmospheric design, with jagged landscapes and shadowy enemies that amplify the urgency. While combat mechanics are straightforward, the Zupay's unpredictable interventions add risk-reward layers. Early player feedback praises the game's pacing and visual identity, though some note repetitive enemy types. A niche pick for fans of aggressive brawlers with narrative flair.
After the death of General Güemes, his renowned militia of gauchos, known as Los Infernales, was disbanded. Our protagonist, who had left the war behind to live a peaceful life, is once again forced to defend his homeland from the invaders. The royalists are hunting down the last of Los Infernales. In the midst of an ambush on his village, our gaucho is taken by the Zupay, an Incan legend. The Zupay, a devil or demon, requires the fear of his enemies to be summoned. Betrayed and forgotten, the gaucho draws his faca to face his foes. Together with his new host, he embarks on a journey to Upper Peru to put an end to the royalists once and for all.
