Zzoom is a 1980s shooter where you defend unarmed civilians from waves of attacking vehicles. You control a static gun position with a split-screen view showing ground and sky. Use crosshairs to target enemy planes, tanks and subs while monitoring fuel, shields and radar. Refugees march across the horizon you must keep them safe by blasting threats before they close in. Points come from enemy kills and survivors reaching safety. The pace quickens as waves progress forcing split-second decisions between multiple threats. What stands out is the game's tight reaction mechanics and relentless tension. Despite minimalist graphics and 1983-era tech Zzoom maintained a surprisingly addictive difficulty curve. Its small size and simple premise hide a strategic layer as players learn enemy patterns. Still playable today on emulated Spectrum systems the game holds up as a precursor to modern tower defense hybrids.
