Was a game studio which got aquired by Take-Two/Rockstar Games in 2003, and it was shortly after renamed Rockstar San Diego.
Angel Studios operated as a developer and publisher from the United States between 1996 and 2001 before being acquired by Take-Two Interactive in 2003. The company eventually became Rockstar San Diego after its purchase. During its active years, the studio released thirteen games on PlayPile, with twelve of those titles developed by the team and one published by them. Their catalog shows a heavy focus on driving games, as six of their releases fall into the Racing genre. They also produced four Simulator titles and four Sport games. The remaining projects included two Hack and slash/Beat 'em up titles, along with single entries in the Shooter, Arcade, and Platform categories. The studio built most of its reputation during the late 1990s when they released six games. Their output slowed slightly in the early 2000s, resulting in five more releases before the acquisition. Most of their work appeared on the PlayStation 2, which hosted five of their titles. The Nintendo 64 also featured three of their games, while PC, Xbox, and Sega Saturn each held one or two projects. Their average IGDB rating sits at 73.9 out of 100 across six rated entries. This score reflects a generally positive reception for the company. They achieved one great rating above 80, five good ratings between 60 and 79, and no titles that fell into the mixed or poor categories. Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. stands as their highest-rated game with a score of 84.9 from 1998. Midtown Madness 2 followed with a 78 rating in 2000, while Smuggler's Run earned 74.8 that same year. TransWorld Surf also received strong marks at 74 in 2001. The studio maintained this standard through the end of their run. Even their later releases like Smuggler's Run: Warzones kept scores above average at 60.5, though this was lower than their peak performance. Their catalog spans from 1996 to 2001, leaving a consistent footprint in racing and simulation genres before the company ceased operations under its original name.
