Newgrounds is an American entertainment and social media website, Founded on July 6, 1995, by Tom Fulp, the site presently hosts games, movies, audio, and artwork in four respective hubs, or Portals
Newgrounds started as a hub for user-generated content in 1995 before evolving into a major publisher of indie games. Based in the United States, this company operated actively from 2002 through 2020. Their catalog on PlayPile contains 45 titles, with 44 listed under their publishing role and only five as developer credits. The vast majority of their work targets web browser platforms, accounting for 41 of the 45 games. They also released four versions for PC Microsoft Windows, two each for Android and iOS, and single ports for Linux and Mac. The company showed significant output in the 2000s with 27 releases. This number dropped to 13 titles during the 2010s and fell further to just two games in the 2020s before their activity ceased. Their genre focus leans heavily toward Indie, Platform, and Arcade styles, which make up the bulk of their portfolio. They also dabbled in Adventure, Shooter, Strategy, Fighting, Point-and-click, Puzzle, and Simulator categories. Quality control appears inconsistent across their library. Only four titles have received ratings on IGDB, and all four fall into the good range between 60 and 79 points. There are no great or poor scores recorded for this publisher. The highest rated title is Super Mario 63 from 2009 with a score of 77.9. Dys4ia from 2012 follows with 73, while Meat Boy (2008) and The Room (2010) scored 69 and 64 respectively. Recent releases like Newgrounds High Visual Novel and Big Tall Small appeared in late 2020, but the site has not produced many new titles in recent years compared to its peak activity in the previous decade.
