Nintendo Software Technology

United States Founded 1998

Nintendo Software Technology Corporation, doing business as Nintendo Software Technology (NST), is an American video game developer. NST was created by Nintendo as a first-party developer to create games for the North American market, though their games have also been released worldwide. The company was founded by Minoru Arakawa, Claude Comair and Scott Tsumura in 1998 and is located inside of Nintendo of America's headquarters in Redmond, Washington. The establishment took place in 1998 through a collaboration with the private university DigiPen Institute of Technology, also located in Redmond. The offices opened with several doctorate level instructors and some recent graduates of the university working with several Nintendo of America designers and producers. Their first game, Bionic Commando: Elite Forces, was released for the Game Boy Color in 1999 and was a sequel of Capcom's Bionic Commando. Over the years, NST has developed many games for Nintendo consoles such as the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, Wave Race: Blue Storm, and Metroid Prime Hunters. NST started developing Project H.A.M.M.E.R. For the Nintendo Wii but several problems landed the project in 'development hell'. A large amount of funding was spent on cut-scenes early in development, and so when the project started to fall behind, senior staff didn't want to end it because of the capital already spent. The American developers suggested that the problem was the gameplay, however, the Japanese managers believed the problem was the environments. This dispute, among others, made the project drag on for a number of years, before it was completely abandoned in 2009 and a large number of staff were made redundant. DigiPen's Main Campus was based in the same building as theirs until 2010.

Nintendo Software Technology at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile to understand who Nintendo Software Technology is, this profile offers a clear look at their history and output. Founded in 1998 inside Nintendo of America's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, the studio was established through a partnership with DigiPen Institute of Technology. They have been active from 2000 until 2024, releasing a total of 19 games as developers on this site. Their work focuses heavily on specific genres, with platformers and puzzle games tying for the top spot at ten titles each. They also handle five adventure games, four racing games, and smaller numbers of shooters, sports, arcade, strategy, and beat 'em up titles. The company shows a strong preference for Nintendo hardware. Their seven most frequent releases target the Nintendo 3DS, followed by five Wii U games and four on the Nintendo DS. They have also shipped titles for the Wii, Nintendo 64, Switch, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, DSi, and even a web browser title. The volume of their output has shifted over time. The studio was most prolific during the 2000s with ten games released. This number dropped to six in the 2010s and further declined to just two titles in the 2020s so far. Quality trends for Nintendo Software Technology show a consistent pattern of average performance. Out of 16 rated games, none achieved a great score above 80. Fifteen titles fall into the good range between 60 and 79, while one game sits in the mixed category. Their highest-rated work includes Ridge Racer 64 from 2000 with a score of 79.8, followed closely by Mario vs. Donkey Kong (2004) at 78.6 and Metroid Prime Hunters (2006) at 78.3. Recent releases like the February 2024 entry in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series hold a 75.6, while F-Zero 99 from late 2023 sits at 70.2. The studio has faced significant internal challenges that affected their output. They attempted to develop Project H.A.M.M.E.R. for the Wii but the project stalled due to disputes between American and Japanese management regarding gameplay versus environments. High spending on cut-scenes early in development contributed to this delay. The project was eventually abandoned in 2009 after years of struggle, resulting in staff redundancies. Their first game, Bionic Commando: Elite Forces, appeared in 1999 as a sequel to a Capcom title. While they remain a first-party developer for the North American market, their recent production pace suggests a much smaller operation compared to their early years.
