Piranha Bytes

Germany Founded 1997 Website

Piranha Bytes are developers of computer games located in the Ruhrgebiet, Germany’s industrial heartland. They have developed the much acclaimed GOTHIC, Risen, and ELEX computer roleplaying games. Pluto 13 GmbH was founded in 2002 by employees and management of Piranha Bytes Software GmbH. Piranha Bytes Software GmbH was itself founded in 1997 and later (1999) turned into a 100% subsidiary of Phenomedia AG, a company listed on Germany’s Neuer Markt stock exchange. In 2001 the first GOTHIC game was released to the public. In May 2002 Phenomedia AG went into insolvency proceedings due to irregularities for which several former group managers (not Piranha Bytes’ management!) have been tried for in a German criminal court of law. It was therefore decided to make a clean cut and negotiate an MBO with the administrator, which was concluded in September 2002. Pluto 13 GmbH was founded and major assets, trademarks and most staff were transferred to the new company. One of the four original founders remained with the team in a leading position. Pluto 13 GmbH is a privately owned limited liability corporation under German law, all shares were held by its staff and management. In 2019 Piranha Bytes were fully acquired by THQ Nordic and reincorporated into Piranha Bytes GmbH. Staff and management remained unchanged. Current permanent staff is around 30 people - all but of one doing active development (designers, programmers, scripters, artists...).

Piranha Bytes at a Glance

Piranha Bytes is a German developer based in the Ruhrgebiet that has focused almost exclusively on making role-playing games since its first release in 2001. The company operates out of Pluto 13 GmbH, which was established in 2002 after the original entity went through ownership changes and bankruptcy proceedings. Today the studio is a privately owned firm with around thirty staff members who handle all development work internally. Their catalog on PlayPile contains eleven titles, all developed by the team rather than published under another label. The studio has maintained a very narrow focus throughout its history. Ten of their games are role-playing titles, while the remaining works include adventure, strategy, and hack-and-slash games. They have released these games across several platforms including PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Mac. Their output has slowed significantly over time. The 2000s saw seven game releases, the 2010s had three titles, and only one new game appeared in the 2020s as of this writing. Quality ratings for Piranha Bytes are generally positive but show a clear downward trend in later years. Their two highest-rated games are Gothic II from 2002 with an 83.7 score and the original Gothic from 2001 at 81.9. Both of these titles sit in the great category. The 2009 release Risen also performed well with a 78.5 rating. However, scores dipped after that period. Gothic 3 from 2006 dropped to 69.1, and Elex II from 2022 sits at 68.7. The average score across all rated titles is 71.6 out of 100. Six of their eight rated games fall into the good range between 60 and 79, while none are classified as mixed or poor. Fans of deep role-playing systems will find their early work most consistent. The studio built a reputation on fantasy RPGs before branching into sci-fi settings with the Elex series. Recent releases like Risen 3: Titan Lords and Elex did not reach the heights of their earlier catalog entries, yet they still maintained acceptable scores above sixty points. The team has remained stable since the 2002 restructuring, with no major staff changes despite being acquired by THQ Nordic in 2019.
