The Learning Company (TLC) was an educational software company founded in 1980 in Palo Alto, California and headquartered in Fremont, California. The company produced a grade-based line of learning software, edutainment games, and productivity tools. Its titles included the flagship series Reader Rabbit, for preschoolers through second graders, and The ClueFinders, for more advanced students. The company was also known for publishing licensed educational titles featuring characters such as Arthur, Scooby-Doo, Zoboomafoo, and Caillou. In September 17 1995, the company was acquired by SoftKey in a hostile takeover bid, at which point SoftKey assumed the Learning Company name and brand. The Learning Company née SoftKey was subsequently acquired by Mattel in August 7 1999.
The Learning Company operated as a US-based publisher and developer from 1984 through 2012, leaving behind a catalog of 75 games on PlayPile. They functioned primarily as a publisher with 60 titles under their name, though they also developed 46 projects themselves. Their output was heavily concentrated in the PC market, with 65 games designed for Microsoft Windows. The company also released versions for Macintosh, DOS, and several later consoles including the Wii and PlayStation 2. Their genre focus centered on adventure and puzzle gameplay. Out of their total library, 28 titles fall into the adventure category while 26 are classified as point-and-click games. They also produced 23 puzzle games and a smaller selection of strategy, card, and simulation titles. The company began in the 1980s with only five releases but saw significant growth in the 1990s when they published 38 games. This momentum continued into the 2000s with 27 more titles before their activity slowed to just five games in the 2010s. Critically, the reception of their work was poor across the board. The average IGDB rating for their two rated titles sits at 32.7 out of 100. There are no great, good, or mixed rated games in the dataset provided. Both titles that have ratings fall into the poor category. Prince of Persia 3D from 1999 holds a score of 36.4, and Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums from 2004 sits at 29. Despite their history with well-known franchises like Reader Rabbit and The ClueFinders, the specific games tracked here did not meet high standards according to available data. The company underwent significant corporate changes during its lifespan. It was acquired by SoftKey in a hostile takeover in 1995, and later purchased by Mattel in 1999. Their final years were marked by a rush of Carmen Sandiego Adventures in Math releases in early 2012, including titles such as The Case of the Crumbling Cathedral and The Big Ben Burglary. These recent entries represent the last known activity from The Learning Company before they ceased operations.
