An American Tail is a platform game adapted from the 1986 animated film. You play as Fievel Mousekewitz navigating 10 levels that mirror key moments from his journey across Russia and New York. The game blends side-scrolling platforming with light puzzle solving as you jump over obstacles, avoid predators, and collect items. Cutscenes from the movie bookend levels, maintaining the story’s emotional core about family separation and immigrant struggles. Controls are straightforward but can feel floaty at times, requiring precise timing for jumps and interactions. The game stands out for its nostalgic presentation and period details, capturing the late 19th century immigrant experience with mice-in-disguise. While not widely discussed today, it remains a niche pick for fans of classic animated adaptations. Its charm comes from faithfully translating the film’s visuals and themes into gameplay, even if mechanics haven’t aged perfectly. Short levels keep momentum steady, though some may find the difficulty curve uneven.
Believing in the American dream, they head to New York City by boat because "there are no cats in America, and the streets are paved with cheese." The hero, a little mouse named Fievel, is washed overboard in a storm, and his search for his family, who believe he is dead and therefore aren't looking for him, forms the bulk of the film. Once arriving in America, all mice immediately discover that there are indeed cats in America. They begin living in a typical late 19th century immigrant manner: working in a sweatshop, living in horrible conditions, being extorted by gangs and living in constant fear of being eaten.
