Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja is a 1988 side-scrolling beat ’em up where two tough guys fight through streets, sewers, and caves to save a president from ninjas. Players control either Blade or Striker, trading punches, kicks, and occasional weapons in fast-paced brawls. The game supports solo or co-op play and leans into over-the-top action with cartoonish violence. Its retro visuals and simple mechanics put the focus on constant combat and progression through increasingly wild locations. The game’s legacy hinges on its absurd premise and a now-iconic intro line from a Secret Service agent asking if you’re “a bad enough dude” to rescue the president. While early reviews were split, its mix of humor and arcade energy helped it endure as a cult classic. The Japanese version changes the intro dialogue entirely, but the American release’s phrase became a meme long before the internet had hashtags. With ports across DOS, Amiga, and even the Zeebo, its goofy charm and accessibility kept it relevant for decades.
The game starts in New York City, where President Ronnie (based on former U.S. President Ronald Reagan) has been kidnapped by the nefarious DragonNinja. The intro says: "Rampant ninja related crimes these days... Whitehouse is not the exception...". As soon as that occurs, a Secret Service agent (who resembles Arnold Schwarzenegger as he appears in The Terminator) asks two street-smart brawlers, named Blade and Striker: "President Ronnie has been kidnapped by the ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue Ronnie?", which this quote became an infamous meme and is often lampooned on the Internet. In the Japanese version, however, the words are completely different. After they heard that, the Bad Dudes confirmed it by pursuing the DragonNinja through the city streets, highway, sewers, transport train, forest, cave and into the secret ninja base, in order to save President Ronnie.
