Bakumatsu Kourinden Oni is a 1996 Super Famicom RPG that follows a young hero's quest to battle supernatural foes in a Japan reshaped by centuries of myth and conflict. Protagonist Yamatomaru stumbles into a clash with yokai, only to be rescued by Jurota Mibu, a member of a secret anti-creature force called the Shadow Shinsengumi. The game tasks players with guiding Yamatomaru through turn-based combat, skill upgrades, and a narrative tied to real historical figures like Sakamoto Ryoma and Tokugawa Yoshinobu. Its story weaves folklore with political intrigue, positioning players as both warrior and scholar navigating a world where ghosts and samurai coexist. What sets this entry apart is its layered worldbuilding and the way it bridges the ONI series’ legacy. Set 670 years after its predecessor, it expands on shared lore while introducing new dynamics between human factions and otherworldly threats. Though largely overlooked outside Japan, the game earned a niche reputation for its deep, methodical gameplay and atmospheric storytelling. Fans of classic RPGs with a focus on tactical battles and historical fusion might find its approach rewarding, even if its dated presentation limits broader appeal.
The main character is Yamatomaru, a boy living in the town of Iida. One day, Yamatomaru hears that a child living in the same town has been captured by yokai, and he goes to his rescue by himself. He manages to defeat a few yokai, but is almost defeated by the surviving ones. He is saved from his predicament by Jurota Mibu, a " Kage no Shinsengumi " (Shadow Shinsengumi) whose job it is to exterminate youkai. Jurouta tells Yamatomaru that he has the potential to become a member of the " Kage no Shinsengumi," and so the story begins.
