Baldr Sky "Zero" is a cyberpunk action game that mixes beat 'em up combat with visual novel storytelling. You play as Edward, a nameless fighter who wakes up in a digital battlefield, teaming up with Sakura to survive waves of enemies and figure out mysteries. The game alternates between fast-paced brawls against viruses and giant robots and slower narrative segments where dialogue choices shape relationships. Set in a divided world where virtual and real-life conflicts collide, the story follows Edward’s struggle to remember his past while adapting to a war-torn society dependent on piloted mechs. The game stands out for its tight combat mechanics and layered narrative. While the 2013 release date means it’s older, fans on forums still praise its blend of action and character-driven plots. The prequel status adds depth to the Baldr Sky series, offering context for later entries. With its mix of anime-inspired visuals and strategic fighting, it’s a niche pick for players who enjoy stories where personal stakes and sci-fi battles intersect.
When Edward came to in the virtual world, he was in the middle of a battle. A giant humanoid robot (simulacrum) distracted the enemy (virus) which was targeting him by yelling at him. The girl Sakura and him fought off the enemies’ attacks together and then helped out a girl who was being chased by the state army. As he was about to depart the virtual world, he remarked to Sakura that he could not remember his own name. Coming to in the real world, he found himself in a foreign room. He soon met Sakura again. She belonged to the Squall team of the Fenrir mercenary unit and this was their base. In the Southeast Asia State (SAS) where reality and the virtual world are separated, the only way to survive in this never-ending war was to pilot a simulacrum, so he volunteered to join Fenrir.
