Barbarian is a four player brawler from Saffire that lets you brawl in split screen or online matches. The action feels basic with chunky moves and exaggerated animations. Characters swing axes and leap through stages with minimal polish. Matches play out in arenas filled with loose debris you can toss at opponents. The single player mode offers limited content to justify repeated plays. The game’s design leans into over the top brutality but lacks the smooth mechanics or memorable moments that could make it stick. It launched alongside the Xbox PS2 and GameCube in 2002 but faded quickly from public memory. Some retro fighters still remember its clumsy charm though most agree it never found its footing.
