Bio-Hazard Battle drops you into a shooter set on the ravaged planet Avaron after a planet-destroying biowar. You control a crew member of the Odysseus, a space station housing Earth’s last survivors. The mission is to pilot an organic ship to the surface, scanning for safe zones to colonize while fending off mutated creatures born from a rogue retrovirus. Gameplay mixes top-down shooting with exploration as you fly over hazardous terrain, balancing combat with environmental analysis to identify livable areas. The game stands out for its 90s-era sci-fi aesthetic and fusion of action with survival elements. Its organic ship design and virus-born enemies create a distinctive visual and mechanical identity. Released in 1992, it ran on Sega’s Genesis and early PCs, making it a relic of retro shooters with a focus on methodical play. While not a household name, its blend of strategic scanning and chaotic firefights has earned it a niche following among fans of old-school sci-fi shooters.
During G-Biowar I (the first global biowar), a powerful new form of retrovirus was released as a deadly reprisal from the enemy. The viruses unleashed biological forces which couldn't be stopped, leaving the planet filled with new and deadly forms of life. Only a few survivors remain in suspended animation in O.P. Odysseus, an orbiting platform circling Avalon. The space station's purpose is to keep the surviving humans alive until Avalon is habitable again. The crew of the Odysseus have been frozen in cryogenic tanks for hundreds of years, and now the onboard computer has awakened them. Computer probes show that conditions on Avalon are hostile but livable. The question is; where can the crew of Odysseus set up a colony? The gameplay involves piloting an organic ship to Avalon, flying over areas which the probes have designated least hostile, ascertaining planetary conditions and, ultimately finding a new home for the remaining survivors.
