Sega Corporation

Japan Founded 2000

Sega Corporation was the legal successor to Sega Enterprises which came into being on 1st November, 2000. It was then when the company established the system of having ten different subsidiaries each with their own brand. These were WOW Entertainment, Sega AM2, Hitmaker, Amusement Vision, Sega Rosso, Smilebit, Overworks, Sonic Team, United Game Artists and Wave Master. Sega Corporation then took care of production and marketing work. This structure was disbanded in July of 2004. In the 1st of April 2015, it was split into Sega Games and Sega Interactive.

Sega Corporation at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile to understand Sega Corporation, you will find a Japanese publisher that has been active from 1989 through 2018. The company currently lists 129 games on the platform, with 122 credits as a publisher and 84 as a developer. Their catalog spans many decades, but the volume of their output changed drastically over time. They released only one game in the 1980s and three in the 1990s. The landscape shifted heavily in the 2000s when they produced 81 titles, followed by 43 games in the 2010s before their activity ceased around 2018. Sega operates across a wide range of genres without focusing on just one. Their data shows strong representation in Music with 20 titles and Arcade games with 19. They also have significant presence in Card & Board Games, Role-playing games, Sports, and Puzzle categories. Their platform reach is equally broad, though legacy devices dominate their numbers. Legacy Mobile Devices account for 33 games, while Arcade cabinets follow with 29. PlayStation 3 holds the spot with 14 titles, and other consoles like the PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Wii appear in smaller numbers alongside PC and mobile platforms. Quality trends show a generally positive reception among rated users, though there is variation. Out of 25 rated titles, four achieved great scores above 80, while sixteen earned good marks between 60 and 79. Five titles fell into the mixed range, and none were rated poor. Their highest-rated works include Yakuza 0 from 2015 with a score of 86.1, Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown at 85.7, and Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd at 80.1. Wonder Boy in Monster World remains their top-rated title from the earlier era with a score of 79. Recent releases like Sega Pocket Club Manager and StarHorse Pocket show continued activity up to late 2018. The company underwent significant structural changes during this period, splitting into Sega Games and Sega Interactive in 2015 after previously managing ten different subsidiaries until 2004. While they have a long history, the data suggests their most prolific era was the first two decades of the new millennium.
