Castles II: Siege & Conquest mixes kingdom building with tactical combat and political maneuvering. You start with a plot of land and a handful of resources. The goal is to expand your territory by scouting, battling, and converting villages into loyal strongholds. Each decision affects food supply, military strength, and relations with neighbors. You’ll negotiate truces, break them for profit, and balance the demands of your subjects and the church. The game shifts between managing settlements and commanding units in turn-based battles where terrain and timing matter as much as numbers. Released in 1992, this title holds up for its layered strategy and historical flavor. It avoids over-simplifying medieval governance, tax rates, crop yields, and even weather impact stability. While the pixel art feels dated, the core mechanics of survival and expansion remain sharp. Players often cite the tension of outmaneuvering rivals while keeping your own realm from starving or rebelling. A deep but overlooked strategy title that rewards careful planning over brute force.
It is the year 1311. The King of France just died and because King Charles didn’t have any heir it is up to you to take control of as much of France as you can. If you manage the Kingdom properly and the Pope gives you the blessing, then you will become the King of France.
