Columns III is a puzzle game where you stack colored jewel blocks as they fall from the top of the screen. You can rotate and position each piece to create lines of three or more matching colors. When those lines form horizontally vertically or diagonally the blocks vanish and you earn points. The catch is the pieces keep coming faster over time and if they reach the top of the play area the game ends. A single player mode focuses on high scores while multiplayer adds a competitive edge as you race against another person to clear more blocks. The game has stuck around since 1993 and still shows up on modern systems from Windows to Wii. Its simple rules and growing difficulty create a tension that’s easy to get hooked on. Some retro gaming forums list it among the most played puzzle titles of the 90s. The cross platform availability means you can take the same challenge from your PC to a Sega Genesis. With no fluff or story to slow things down it’s pure block dropping action that holds up against newer puzzle games.
