Crash Bandicoot launched on September 9, 1996 as the debut title for Naughty Dog on the original PlayStation. This platformer established a massive franchise by following Crash, a bandicoot turned into a weapon by the mad scientist Doctor Neo Cortex. You control Crash in a third-person view to navigate island levels filled with traps and enemies. The game also released later on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Portable, and Android devices. It remains one of the most recognizable 3D platformers from the mid-90s era. Players jump, spin, and collect crates while trying to stop Cortex from taking over the world.
You move Crash forward through a series of linear stages where the camera follows closely behind him. Most levels use side-scrolling or forward-scrolling paths that force you to time your jumps precisely. The core loop involves running past spikes, TNT crates, and spinning enemies while collecting Wumpa fruit. You defeat foes by jumping on their heads or using the spin attack to launch them away. Some stages shift perspective to show depth as you hop between platforms. A typical session requires memorizing enemy patterns and avoiding instant death traps. The controls feel tight enough to make precise jumps possible, though falling off a platform often sends you back to a checkpoint.
The PlayPile data shows this title holds an IGDB score of 77.8 out of 100 based on 692 user ratings. Community members describe the vibe as wholesome with four votes supporting that label. Players spend roughly 13 hours completing the main story, while speedrunners and completionists push that time higher. Many users note the high difficulty in later levels compared to early stages. Review snippets often mention the satisfying sound of breaking crates and the frustration of dying repeatedly near the end. No other site tracks these specific community moods or completion metrics alongside standard critic scores.
This game is worth buying if you enjoy classic 3D platforming with a steep learning curve. The price varies by platform but remains reasonable for the amount of content provided. Completing all levels unlocks achievement data that tracks your progress through every island. Crash Bandicoot offers solid mechanics and memorable moments without relying on modern gimmicks. It is not for players who want open worlds or easy modes. You will likely die many times before finishing the final boss. Play it to see where Naughty Dog started their career.
Dr. Neo Cortex and Dr. Nitrus Brio, two evil doctors determined to take over the world, create two devices to turn innocent creatures into genius destroyers of the world. One particular animal, a Bandicoot, is chosen to be the leader of the pack, but when the devices fail in their attempts, the animals are turned into crazy monsters. Only Crash Bandicoot survives with brain intact, now knowing that Neo Cortex is the real bad guy. Cortex notices the threat that Crash may cause, and banishes Crash to another island. So it is up to Crash to find his way through the islands monster population and stop Cortex from destroying the world, as well as saving his girlfriend who is next on the devices list.
