"There are so many aspects of its design in which Disco Elysium stands unmatched. Boasting unparalleled player agency, the sort of writing that makes me deeply jealous and a cast of characters that are resolutely unforgettable, Disco Elysium is easily one of the most intelligent and fascinating RPGs ever made. However, in its current form, the presence of game breaking bugs that prevent you from finishing missions, levels a near fatal blow at Disco Elysium that not even its towering brilliance is sufficient to overcome. I'm sure there's a timeline where all the bugs have been fixed and I'm playing Disco Elysium for the first time, awarding it the 10/10 score it deserves. Right now, this isn't that timeline."

About Disco Elysium: The Final Cut

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut stands as an open-world RPG from developer ZA/UM, arriving on March 30, 2021. This enhanced edition brings full voice acting, new quests, and additional narrative paths to the original hit. You play as a detective waking up with amnesia in Revachol to investigate a murder that threatens the entire city. The game runs on nearly every modern platform including PC, consoles, and Switch. It offers a single-player experience where your choices shape the story. The setting mixes gritty crime drama with surreal political philosophy. Nothing stays off limits here as you navigate death, sex, taxes, and disco in a world that feels both familiar and strange.

Gameplay

You do not swing fists or fire guns during most sessions. Instead, you spend your time talking to citizens, checking notes, and rolling dice against the game's internal skill system. Your character has forty skills like Logic, Empathy, and Electrochemistry that act as voices in his head. You might argue with a suspect while wrestling with an inner voice telling you not to trust anyone. Combat happens through these dialogue checks rather than health bars. You investigate crime scenes by interacting with objects and making observations. New quests in this cut let you explore areas you previously could not reach. Sessions often involve reading long text blocks, choosing responses, and managing your character's sanity while solving the central murder mystery.

What Players Think

Critics and players rate this title exceptionally high. OpenCritic gives it an 89 out of 100 with 93.15% of reviewers recommending it. IGN and Wccftech both awarded perfect scores, calling it a masterpiece that elevates the original RPG. The IGDB shows a 92.6 rating from 201 user reviews. Community mood leans heavily toward admiration for the writing depth. Average playtime hovers around 45 hours for a main story run, though completionists spend over 60 hours finding all endings. Review snippets praise how the game owns its flaws rather than hiding them. Players frequently mention the voice acting adds a new layer to the already dense narrative. The data suggests this is one of the most respected indie games released in recent years.

PlayPile's Take

This game is for players who want deep reading and complex character dynamics over fast action. It costs around $40 depending on sales, which fits its massive content volume. You can unlock 45 achievements while exploring every corner of Revachol. The Final Cut version is the only way to play if you care about voice lines. ZA/UM delivered a complete package that feels finished and polished. Skip this if you prefer action-heavy adventures or short sessions. Play it if you want a story that sticks with you long after the credits roll.

Storyline

Disco Elysium is a stylish open-world role playing game where it's up to you to decide what sort of detective you want to be. After waking up in a trashed hostel room with a hangover and no memory of his past, follow a detective trying to piece his life back together while investigating a murder in the town of Revachol. After initially appearing to be an open and close case, it soon transpires this murder has triggered a chain of events that has wider implications on the city and its inhabitants. Death, sex, taxes, and disco – nothing is off the table. Revachol is a real place with real challenges. Solve the massive murder investigation or relax and kick back with sprawling side-cases. The detective decides - the citizens abide.
