About

Ex Mutants is a side scrolling platformer where you control one of two characters navigating a post nuclear world. You jump over hazards and enemies while progressing through stages filled with Sluggo's forces. Each level has distinct environments from ruined cities to alien landscapes. Combat involves basic attacks and health pickups scattered throughout. The game follows a straightforward mission to reclaim humanity by defeating the main antagonist. This title gained a small following among retro gamers for its comic book ties and 90s era Mega Drive visuals. While not a critical hit upon release it has since become a curiosity for fans of early 90s platformers. The two character options and short campaign make it a quick play through. Some players note the controls feel dated by modern standards but the nuclear themed levels and mutant designs still stand out.

Storyline

Ex-Mutants was a comic book series created by writer David Lawrence and artist Ron Lim along with editor David Campiti in 1986. It was later published in a revamped version by Malibu Comics. A videogame for the Sega Genesis based on the Malibu version was released. In the Malibu version of Ex-Mutants, there were three males (Dillon, Ackroyd and Bud) and three females (Shannon, Piper and Tanya). These six were mutants who were gathered by Professor Kildare, a robotic-looking cyborg and turned into humans. Ackroyd and Shannon were the playable characters in the Sega Genesis game.
