Malibu Interactive was the video game division of Malibu Comics, formed in 1992 after Malibu Graphics merged with Acme Interactive to form Malibu Comics Entertainment. The company closed in 1994, after Malibu Comics was acquired by Marvel.
Malibu Interactive operated as a video game division for Malibu Comics between 1992 and 1994. This short window of activity resulted in fifteen titles released as a developer and two published through their label. The company formed after Malibu Graphics merged with Acme Interactive to create Malibu Comics Entertainment before closing when Marvel acquired the comic book publisher. Their entire catalog focuses on the 1990s, with thirteen games appearing during that decade and no later output. The majority of their work targeted the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Mega Drive or Genesis. Nine titles appeared on the SNES while eight found a home on the Genesis. Two releases came out for the Sega CD, and single games launched on the Super Famicom, DOS, Amiga, and Atari ST/STE platforms. Their genre focus varied widely across adventure, platformer, hack and slash, beat 'em up, shooter, simulator, racing, sport, fighting, role-playing, and strategy games. Adventure, platform, and hack and slash or beat 'em up titles each accounted for four games in their library. Quality ratings from IGDB show a mixed performance across the six rated titles they have on record. The average score sits at 63 out of 100. No title achieved a great rating above 80, but four games received good scores between 60 and 79. Two titles fell into the mixed range between 40 and 59. There were no poor ratings below 40 on this list. The highest rated game is Batman Returns from 1992 with a score of 72.6. Riddick Bowe Boxing followed in 1993 at 68, while Cliffhanger and MechWarrior 3050 both landed in the low 60s. The company ended production quickly after their 1992 founding. Later releases like Time Trax in December 1994 and Ultraverse Prime in June 1994 did not reach the heights of their earlier Batman title. Three Ninjas Kick Back received a score of 57.1, indicating a drop in quality compared to their best work. Sports Illustrated Championship Football & Baseball also released in February 1994 without reaching top-tier scores. The rapid closure of Malibu Interactive after just two years of operation limited their ability to establish a long-term reputation or expand their portfolio beyond these fifteen games.
