About Final Fantasy V

Final Fantasy V landed on the Super Famicom in December 1992 as a major entry in Square's long-running series. This Japanese-exclusive RPG quickly became a bestseller, moving over two million copies before any international release occurred. The story follows four distinct characters who must stop the sorcerer Exdeath from exploiting the world's four elemental crystals. Players control Bartz, Lenna, Galuf, and Faris on their quest to restore balance to a crumbling world. Square Enix later ported this title to platforms like Wii and Game Boy Advance, with enhanced versions arriving on mobile devices in 2013. The game stands out for its deep customization options that let players shape every character's abilities.

Gameplay

You control a party of four characters who gain experience points by defeating enemies in turn-based battles. The core loop involves exploring overworld maps, talking to NPCs, and managing equipment between encounters. Every character can equip weapons, armor, and accessories from their inventory. The standout feature is the Job System, which allows you to switch roles like Knight, Thief, or Black Mage at any time. You level up a specific job independently, unlocking new spells and skills for that role. Once a character reaches max level in a job, they can learn its abilities permanently even if they switch to a different class later. This system creates thousands of viable build combinations for your squad. Battles require careful management of HP and MP while executing strategic attacks or healing magic.

What Players Think

The PlayPile data shows this title holds an IGDB score of 78.2 out of 100 based on 130 user ratings. Community vibes lean heavily toward a competitive spirit, with one vote recorded in that category. The average playtime for completions sits around 45 hours for main story objectives, though full 100% runs often exceed 60 hours due to the depth of job switching. Critics and players alike praise the freedom found in character customization. Review snippets frequently mention the unique progression system as a high point. The game maintains a solid reputation among RPG enthusiasts who appreciate complex mechanical depth over simple linear narratives.

PlayPile's Take

Final Fantasy V is worth your time if you enjoy grinding for gear and experimenting with different job combinations. The price varies by platform, but the GBA or mobile versions offer good value for the content provided. There are no achievement lists to chase since this predates modern systems, but the satisfaction comes from mastering the Job System itself. This game suits players who want deep mechanical complexity rather than a straightforward story. It is not for those seeking quick sessions or simple combat mechanics. The customization options ensure that your party feels distinct based on your choices alone.

Storyline

Embark on an epic adventure as four heroes are driven together by fate: Bartz and his chocobo companion, Princess Lenna of Castle Tycoon, the mysterious Galuf, and the pirate captain Faris. The crystals that bring peace and prosperity to the world – earth, water, fire, and wind – have lost their power and are on the verge of destruction. These Crystals acted as a seal on Exdeath, an evil sorcerer. Bartz and his party must keep the Crystals from being exploited by Exdeath's influence and prevent his resurgence.
