About

Gladiator is a 1986 arcade action game where you play as a gladiator navigating a castle’s shifting corridors. The controls map movement left/right with the joystick, shield positioning up/down, and three buttons for high/medium/low sword attacks. Four distinct stages challenge you from subterranean chambers to a surreal "4-D World" that warps as you progress. Combat is timed around enemy patterns and environmental hazards, requiring quick reflexes and shield placement to survive. The goal is to clear each level and reach the final "Treasure Place," earning points and bragging rights. The game stands out for its inventive level design and the fourth stage’s mind-bending geometry, which bends corridors and creates optical illusions. Multiplayer support in some ports lets a second player join as a shield-bearing companion, though AI in single-player mode keeps the tension high. With roots in Japanese arcade culture and a quirky name (it was called Ougon no Shiro in Japan), it’s a relic of late-80s platform combat that still rewards precise timing. The Commodore 64 and Spectrum ports preserved its core loop, even if later tech reveals its age.
