About Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars stands apart as an original entry released by Rockstar Leeds on March 17, 2009. This title launched across the Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, Android, and iOS platforms rather than hitting home consoles like its siblings. The story follows Huang Lee, a spoiled heir who travels to Liberty City to deliver a cursed sword to his uncle Kenny. Assassins intercept them immediately, forcing Huang into a desperate struggle against the Triad syndicate to survive and reclaim his family honor. It brings the series formula down to handheld screens with a focus on touch controls or buttons depending on your device choice.

Gameplay

You spend most of your time controlling Huang Lee from an isometric perspective while navigating Liberty City's dense streets. The game replaces car steering wheels with virtual joysticks and gun aims with touch targets or D-pad inputs. You complete missions that involve shooting enemies, stealing vehicles, and using the environment for cover. A typical session involves driving a beat-up sedan through traffic while dodging police patrols or engaging in firefights on narrow sidewalks. The DS version lets you draw paths for AI teammates to follow, adding a tactical layer to the chaos. You also manage your character's health and armor between missions to stay alive in the open world.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community has rated this title an impressive 83.3 out of 100 based on 182 user submissions. Players generally describe the vibe as tense yet accessible, with many noting how well the controls translate to smaller screens. Average playtime hovers around 14 hours for a standard run, though completionists spend closer to 20 hours hunting down all collectibles and achievements. Review snippets frequently mention the unique touch mechanics as a highlight that works better than expected. Critic scores from IGDB support this enthusiasm with a solid 83 average. The game maintains a loyal following among handheld gamers who appreciate the depth of story despite the smaller form factor.

PlayPile's Take

This is a necessary play for anyone with a DS, PSP, or mobile device who wants to see how Rockstar adapted its biggest franchise for portable hardware. The price point varies by platform but usually sits under ten dollars on sale. There are no major flaws in execution, though the isometric view might feel cramped compared to modern 3D entries. You get a complete story arc with decent replay value through side activities and hidden items. If you want a solid shooter adventure that respects your time without demanding a console setup, this delivers exactly what it promises right out of the box.

Storyline

Huang Lee, the spoiled son of a recently murdered Triad boss, arrives by plane in Liberty City with Yu Jian, a sword that Huang's father won in a poker game and has decided to use as an heirloom, to deliver it to the new patriarch of the family, Huang's uncle Wu "Kenny" Lee. Shortly after landing, Huang's escorts are killed by assassins and he is shot and kidnapped. The assailants steal the sword and, thinking Huang is dead, dump his body in the water. Huang manages to survive and informs Kenny that Yu Jian has been taken. Kenny explains that he had intended to offer the sword to Hsin Jaoming, the aging Triad boss in Liberty City, as a means of securing a position as his replacement. Kenny has been dishonored and reduced in power due to the loss of Yu Jian, leaving him and Huang working to keep their businesses afloat.
